“サステナブル”という言葉が大事な事ですがやや流行り言葉として流行している感じもありますが、靴の分野でこのサステナブルと真剣に向き合っている会社があります。
Allbirdsというブランドの靴をご存知でしょうか。最近街中でも見かけることが増えてきているので知っている人もいると思いますが、サンフランシスコ発のシューズメーカです。
カーボンフットプリントや再生可能素材というのは今各所で話題になっていることだと思います（この手の取り組みとしてもAppleはリードしていますね）。
Allbirdsは靴という分野で自然に無理しない方法で、良質な靴を作ることを目指している会社です。

前から気にはなっていたのですが、正直少し高めな値段ということもあり諦めていたのですが、昨年思い切って購入しました。基本、僕自身は服などには必要以上にお金をかけないタイプですが、靴は比較的自分の好き嫌いがあり、デザインもシンプルですっきりしていいて僕好みだったので思い切って買ってみて履いたところ、履き心地がよく、先日二足目を購入しました。

“Sustainability” is an important word, but it seems to have become somewhat of a buzzword. There is a company that takes sustainability seriously in the field of footwear.
Have you heard of the Allbirds brand of shoes? You may have seen their shoes around town in Japan recently, and you may know them as a shoe manufacturer from San Francisco.
Carbon footprint and renewable materials are hot topics in many places right now (Apple is leading the way in these efforts as well).
Allbirds is a company that aims to make quality shoes in a way that doesn’t overpower nature in the field of footwear.

I have been aware of this company for a while, but to be honest, I had given up on them because of their high price. But last year I took the plunge and bought a pair. I am basically the type of person who does not spend more money than necessary on clothes, but I have my own preferences when it comes to shoes, and the design was simple, clean, and to my liking. So I bought shoes by Allbirds again.

メリノウール、ユーカリの木、サトウキビ、ユーカリとメリノウール（さらに廃棄されたカニの甲羅）を合成したTrino（TrinoXO）という自然素材を使ってAllbirdsの靴や服は製造されています。
一般的な靴は化学成素材が基本なので、それに履き慣れていた足がどう感じるのか？耐久性的にもどう持つのか？など疑問だらけでしたが、普通の靴と何も変わらない履き心地でした。それどころか、むしろ軽くて足にフィットする履き心地で今までの靴はなんだったんだろう？と思うほどでした。

誤解を招く言い方かもしれませんがAllbirdsは、他の靴と変わらない靴であることには変わりありません。ですが、この靴が、自分が履く一足の靴が出来上がるまでの背景は他の靴とは大きく異なるようです。彼らには言わせれば、比較的短期間で補給できる再生可能資源を使い、靴を製造する過程でのカーボンフットプリント（温室効果ガス排出量）を2030年にはゼロにすることを目指し（2025年には半減が目標）ているそうです。Allbirdsを履くことは、見た目だけではない他の靴を履くこととは違う背景を、新しい靴を履く前から既に持っていることなんだなということはわかりました。

Allbirds’ shoes and clothes are manufactured using natural materials: merino wool, eucalyptus trees, sugar cane, and Trino (TrinoXO), a composite of eucalyptus and merino wool (plus discarded crab shells).
Since most shoes are made of chemically grown materials, we wondered how they would feel on feet that are used to wearing such materials. How would they hold up durably? I had many doubts, but they felt no different from ordinary shoes. On the contrary, they are rather light and fit my feet so well that I wondered what my previous shoes were all about.

This may sound misleading, but Allbirds are still shoes like any other. However, the background behind the creation of this pair of shoes that I wear seems to be very different from other shoes. They use renewable resources that can be replenished in a relatively short period of time, and they aim to reduce the carbon footprint (greenhouse gas emissions) of the shoe manufacturing process to zero by 2030 (with the goal of halving it by 2025.) Wearing Allbirds is not just about looking good! I realized that I already have a different background than wearing other shoes, even before I put on my new shoes.

サステナブルを意識するあまり、何かを犠牲にするようなものになっていては、いずれ使う側の気持ちは離れてしまいます。Allbirdsの靴はサステナブルでありながらも使う人に何かを犠牲にさせてるわけでもなく、また地球に対しても何も犠牲にさせないようにしていることに、この靴の価値があるんだと思います。
日本は原宿、丸の内、大阪とまだ3店舗しかありませんが、通販は実施されています。
もしかしたら、今はまだ”目新しい”が先行しているかもしれませんが、欠かすことが出来ない靴の中からAllbirdsを選ぶことは、ちょっとお値段は高いですが、地面と触れる自分の足を地球に対して優しく接することが出来るのかもしれません。

If you are so conscious of sustainability that you are sacrificing something, you will eventually lose the desire to use the shoes, and I think the value of Allbirds shoes is that they are sustainable, but not at the expense of the user, or at the expense of the earth. I think the value of these shoes is in the fact that they are sustainable and do not sacrifice anything to the user or to the planet.
There are still only three stores in Japan (Harajuku, Marunouchi, and Osaka), but online order is available.
Although “novelty” may still be the leading factor, choosing Allbirds from among the indispensable shoes may be a little pricey, but it may be a way to treat your feet, which come in contact with the ground, in a kinder way to the earth. It may be a little expensive, but you can treat your feet, which touch the ground, gently to the earth.
